Can I get this with a... Happy Ending?

Sweetwater - Happy Ending

For a brewery particularly known for their IPA and 420 Extra IPA, this is a solid stout. Its drop hopped and thats expected from Sweetwater. This is one of the hoppier stouts I will enjoy this year. As American brew fights monthly to incorporate more and more hops into every beer they brew; stout lovers, like myself, find it more difficult to get their beers of choice.

I'm sorry, I still love you beer.

Almost a year ago I wrote about 9 beers that I had picked up from Liquor Loft here in Tallahassee. I only reviewed three of them. So to disabuse myself of shame I will pick up where I left off. I won't review Stella because its everywhere, or Red Stripe, go buy one yourself cheap ass.

Rogue - Mocha Porter
Rogue is notorious for their darker concoction and the mocha porter is no slouch in darkness. It is a ruddy brown color with a lighter chocolate head. It is smooth, and palatably bitter brew. There are indeed notable chocolate and coffee notes. I found this to be a good but not exceptional beer.

Piraat - a BPA (belgian pale ale)
The name is a decent enough indicator of this beer. It will pillage and plunder you if you are not careful. It packs a massive punch, it is quite yeasty, with a high malt profile and back end hops profile. It tails off with a large alcohol taste and at 10.5 there is no doubt why. Best served in a chalice glass or a brandy snifter, give this beer ample air to permeate. I had only 12 oz of this trappist contraption but by the end of it, I may have indeed walked the plank.

Orange Blossom Pilsner
Pilsners were the first true light beer. Prior to the cultivation and use of bottom fermenting yeast, and the appropriation of caves for cool storage; most beer lacked clarity flavor and shelf-life. The Czech's were the first to institute these methods and developed Pilsner Urquel which is still available today. What the fuck does that have to do with OBP? Well simple, this beer is a clear, light frothy beverage with great sessionability (you can drink more than a few of these guys). It is crisp in flavor and benefits from a healthy dosage of Orange Blossom Honey, from my hometown of Orlando FL. I am not particularly biased towards pilsners to begin with, particularly the hoppy variety, however I do enjoy this beer quite a bit, especially in the summer.

North Coast - Old Rasputin
If you are not familiar with the story of Rasputin, the mad monk of czarist Russia, I suggest you do yourself a favor and read this http://badassoftheweek.com/rasputin.html sure the language is a bit colorful but almost completely historically accurate. Not only this but Rasputin happened to also prophesize the downfall of the Romanov dynasty in Russia. He said if he was killed by a commoner, the monarchy would last generations, but if he was taken down by a member of the royal family, no Romanov would live for two years.

If you didn't read the above, Rasputin was an insane holy man of Russia who boned the whole royal family, was legitimately killed like 5 times, and his penis was held by an order of Nun's in Germany as a Holy Relic, which mythically when looked upon cleared erectile dysfunction. Take all of these kickass quality, roll them into one beer, and you get Old Rasputin.

A dessert of a beer, chocolate, coffee, toffee, caramel, complete overhaul of almost everything you know about beer. Basically if Jesus punched you in the mouth this is probably what it would taste like. There is a mild alcohol flavor as well.
As a final note, don't be a pussy, put ice cream in this beer and enjoy a beer float. If you don't, you are an unworthy bitch of a human being.

Wow... what a beer... I mean year

So... it's been almost a year since I've updated my blog. What a god damned shame. Why you ask? Simply because this past year has been a sojourn of epic beer proportions. I've discovered new places, new breweries, tons of new beers. I've loved, I've lost, I've laughed, I've cried... but most importantly I have drank... alot. I know what you're thinking... oh so you drank all kinds of new beers and your lazy ass hasn't updated a damned thing have you? I am chagrined by your rhetorical thoughts. But, I will make it up to you by creating great new content more my blog and catching you up on my malty conquests.

Great Divide - Raspberry

The Great Divide brewery certainly makes some very popular beers, amoung these is Yeti and a few other beer lovers favorite. So naturally I was excited to find a true beer (not a lambic or a framboise) that intimated a fruity undertone without overdoing it.

Well in short, they certaintly didn't overdo it. It no more had the flavor of a single raspberry than Stevie Wonder can skeet shoot by sound. The beer itself was par, but certainly nothing special. A simple midcolor brew. Similar to Budweisers new "American Ale". I was very disappointed.

Taste: 5

Pros: Not very expensive, high drinkability

Cons: Smelled better than it tasted and totally misconstrued its construction

Rogue - Dead Guy German Maibock

Rogue brewery sports a vast array of specialty beers. They have breweries in multiple countries and are recipients of numerous brewer's awards.

One of their most common is Dead Guy ale. A myraid of specialty hops, some light malts and Rogue's one of a kind yeast makes Dead Guy a bitter but smooth and delicious choice for a drinking beer. It pairs well with everything from burgers to salmon. Amber in color, with a lighter than expected head. Dead Guy also has a light nutty flavor.

It is darker in the 12 oz bottle than from the tap and it also creates a more frothy and creamy head out of a bottle.

Taste: 7
Aroma: 7
Texture: 8
Originality: 6

Pros: High drinkability with a very diverse pairing menu. Refreshing and full bodied with good flavor varieties.

Cons: Not particularly outstanding. You will not be awed by any one aspect of this beer. If poured wrong can be too bitter.

Samuel Adams - Brewmaster's Collection - Cherry Wheat

This particular selection caught my eye. Cherry Wheat? Sounds good. It was not a fruit beer per say, not a lambic or a framboise. This was a simple wheat ale brewed with real cherries. I vaguely doubted the claim.

Upon popping the cap, I took a sniff. It smelled lightly hoppy, definitely could smell the wheat. And what was that... cherries? I was intrigued. Then I tasted it. Light, very smooth, a good wheat ale. Then it kind of popped in my mouth... Cherries? It tasted like cherries. It was good. Really good. It didn't overpower the beer, or turn it into something else. The full body and flavor of the rich wheat and the smooth texture stood on there own and yet somehow the presence of cherries coexisted in a way that could only be described as symbiotic. With each sip the flavors blended more naturally, and soon I found myself with an empty bottle wishing for more.

Taste: 7.5

Originality: 9

ABV: 5.0%

Pros: Great interesting flavor, delicious scent, very refreshing.
Cons: A touch watery, could do with a touch more hops.

The Next Step

After that first escapade into the delightful bitter ocean of hops and wheat tinged with citrus my mind began to actually work. This beer stuff, it has many many varieties, I bet they are all different. What do they taste like? Which kind will I like the best? I had no idea yet, but decided I really wanted an idea. So I took a trip to the only liquor store I knew of that might have something exciting.

I walked in. Scanned the shelves, vodka, rum, whiskey. I know about all this stuff, where's the beer? I walked into the back, turned a corner and.... BEERVANA. There were at least 500 different single bottles of beer ranging in price from $1.99 all the way to over $25 for a 12oz bottle. I knew this would take a while, but I might as well start.

I got 9.

Samuel Adams - Brewmaster's Collection - Cherry Wheat
Great Divide Raspberry Ale
Orange Blossom Pilsner
Rogue - Dead Guy Ale
Piraat Ale
Old Rasputian Imperial Stout
Red Stripe (somehow I had not yet tried this)
Rogue - Mocha Porter
Stella Artois (another common I hadn't yet had)

Now the wheels were really turning.
